Local Investigations
The national scope of the Archaeological Survey & Investigation Team's research takes us into every corner of England. In addition to our national and major regional projects, we regularly undertake investigations on a more localised scale, and usually on a 'one-off' basis, of a wide variety of individual sites, monuments and landscapes around the country. We make sure that these investigations fit in with English Heritage's wider research agendas, but they also help to address specific questions or management problems, often in response to requests for assistance from our colleagues in other sections of English Heritage, or in other organisations. Our partners outside English Heritage include:
- Local amateur groups
National Parks
County Archaeological Services
Natural England
The National Trust
The Ministry of Defence
We also have a long-running involvement with Channel 4's Time Team, through Stewart Ainsworth's role as the Team's 'landscape expert'. Click on the map or select from the menu on the left to find out about some examples of our recent local investigations around the country. The results of these pieces of research are published through our in-house reports (British Library reference number: ISSN 1478-7008) and sometimes through academic journal articles or other publications. Occasionally, the findings are so important that they lead to more wide-ranging thematic research projects, covering the entire region or the whole country.
If you are considering a research or conservation project, and think that the Archaeological Survey & Investigation team's involvement might help, you can either find out more about the criteria we apply in deciding whether to take the project forward, or simply contact us.
