English Heritage’s Informed Conservation series of publications highlights the special character of historic areas in England. It aims to raise awareness of the special importance of these areas and to reinforce the positive role that heritage can play in their regeneration.
Many of the books are derived from assessments of urban historic areas which have hitherto received little study and which are to varying degrees facing pressures for redevelopment. A few titles look at particular building types and explain how these structures have shaped the character of the areas in which they sit, e.g. Manchester’s legacy of historic warehouses, and the buildings and landscapes of Northamptonshire’s boot and shoe trade.
The books are written in an engaging style to appeal to the general and specialist reader alike, and are attractively presented with numerous high-quality photographs and specially commissioned graphics. Many of the titles have been produced in partnership with local authorities and other local organisations. To date 19 titles have been published in the series, including five on aspects of Liverpool’s historic environment produced in 2008.
