What is offshore wind power? Norfolk Coast Wind Farm Wind farm under construction off the Norfolk coast © NMR

Power is generated by turbines, placed together as a 'farm' in carefully chosen locations off the coast. Producing electricity in this way provides an alternative means to generate power without the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

How is English Heritage involved?

English Heritage is involved in the whole process of helping to choose the best locations for offshore wind farms right through to working with the developersat the time of construction. The initial site investigation work is therefore very important as it enables us to advise the developer about known marine archaeological interests, such as important historic shipwrecks, but also to make sure that the developer is aware that other materials, possibly of major archaeological importance may lie on or within the seabed but have yet to be discovered.

How can you find out what's on the seabed?

A variety of marine surveying techniques exist to examine the seabed that can identify objects for closer inspection and we work closely with the wind farm developer to make sure we obtain a detailed understanding of the site. It is only through having this information can we ensure that our maritime archaeological heritage is protected.
