Aerial Survey Publications

The Aerial Survey team contributes to a wide range of publications. The results, of the National Mapping Programme (NMP) and other detailed work are normally made the subject of archive reports deposited in the National Monuments Record Centre (NMRC), and available through the Public Search Room (01793 414 600). More recent reports, such as that for the South Downs Pilot NMP project, are also available as hardcopy or a free download as part of the Research Department Report Series. Some results are also made available through monographs such as the recently published Mapping Ancient Landscapes of Northamptonshire (2008) by Alison Deegan and Glenn Foard.

Aerial photography and air photo interpretation are often a major part of other projects. We have worked closely with our field survey colleagues in the Archaeological Survey and Investigation Team on national and major regional projects to produce books like The Creation of Monuments (2001), Field Archaeology of Exmoor (2001) and The Field Archaeology of the Salisbury Plain Training Area (2002).

We have also worked with our colleagues in the Historic Buildings Team to produce books like Birmingham Jewellery Quarter (2002). The team have also contributed photography to recent books such as Shot from Above (2007), the England's Landscapes series, and Images of Change, details of which can be found on the English Heritage Publications website and bought from our on-line bookshop.
