Publications
The scope of the Landscape Investigation Team's research is extremely diverse: this breadth of interest is reflected in the wide range of publications we generate.
We regularly produce well-illustrated books that are guaranteed to remain 'standard works' for decades to come. We have begun to produce a series of free practical guides: With Alidade and Tape (2002),and Where on Earth Are We? (2003) which will help both amateurs and professionals to carry out their own research. You can get details of any of these, and see what reviewers have said about our books, by clicking on the links above, and you can order copies from English Heritage's publications section. We also regularly publish individual pieces of research through academic articles in national and regional journals and elsewhere, which you will be able to order through your local public lending library.
"The most innovative part of the report is undoubtedly Brown and Everson's superb account of the site's context within the surrounding medieval landscape and settlement pattern. ?Studies such as this underline the immense contribution that landscape survey can make to modern castle studies". - review in Medieval Archaeology 45(2001)
We also produce in-house investigation reports (British Library reference numbers: ISSN 1478-7008 & 1749-8775) for each of the individual investigations we undertake, whether they form part of national thematic research projects, or are Local Investigations. They are intended to be accessible to anyone, but may contain more detail than someone with a casual interest will want! Some reports are available to download online, from the individual site webpages. Paper copies of reports can be ordered through the Research Department Reports Database (for reports produced from 2006 onwards) or from our lists of pre-2006 reports.
You can also find out more about the many more reports we have produced in earlier years by contacting the Public Search Room at English Heritage's public archive, the National Monuments Records Centre (telephone: 01793 414 600 or e-mail: customers@english-heritage.org.uk).
