How to Apply
Detailed information on application procedures is given in our Guidance for Applicants which is available through our Procedures & Guidelines page.
1. The first step in developing a project application is to discuss your idea with the relevant English Heritage staff. This might be the Inspector of Ancient Monuments in the Regional Team, the designated national strategy lead, or the Head of Historic Environment Commissions. Information on staff responsible for different policy areas is available from the Historic Environment Commissions Team.
2. We then ask you to submit a Project outline to the Historic Environment Commissions Team at Waterhouse Square. The Project Outline should be no more than 5 or 6 pages of text but it must give us enough information to assess the significance of the project and its relevance to our published priorities. It will need to set out:
- the aims of the project
- the potential of the available data in relation to those aims
- a brief summary of the methods to be employed (especially any innovative methodological or technical developments)
- the main components/tasks of the project
- the potential public benefit, and principal means of dissemination, of the project
- a preliminary estimate of the project costs
- an indication of its likely timetable, including any external time constraints
- an estimate for the costs and time required to produce a full project design
The project outline should be submitted by email (preferably as an attached Microsoft Word97 document; graphic file formats TIFF, GIF & JPEG may also be used) to the Historic Environment Commissions Team (gareth.watkins@english-heritage.org.uk).
If digital submission is not possible please send three paper copies of the project outline to:
Historic Environment Commissions
1 Waterhouse Square
138-142 Holborn
LONDON EC1N 2ST
3. We will make a decision in principle on the basis of the project outline.
If we approve the project we will commission you to produce a MORPHE - compliant Project Design which is a detailed project plan and specification. Subject to our appraisal and approval this will form the basis of our contract. The commissioning of a project design does not represent an agreement by English Heritage to fund the subsequent project
If we decide not to commission the project we will write to you explaining the reasons for our decision.
For emergency applications under PPG16 please refer to the guidance on our PPG16 Assistance page.
