Battle AbbeySat 11 & Sun 12 OctAn attractive walk amongst the woods, hedgerows and sunken lanes of the Hampshire Downs where Parliament’s victory ended Royalist hopes of an advance through the South of England. The Royalists got off to a good start when they captured the tactically important Cheriton Wood but their subsequent attacks were poorly co-ordinated and they were forced to retreat. Among their dead was Sir John Smith, who had recaptured the Royal standard at Edgehill.
