Old Sarum
Distance: 9 miles
High above Salisbury Plain and only a few miles from Stonehenge stands Old Sarum,the original Salisbury. Built in the Iron Age, it was also a Norman fort. William the Conqueror paid off his army here in 1070, and in 1086 summoned all the great landowners of England here to swear an oath of loyalty.
Old Wardour Castle
Distance: 19 miles
A hidden jewel of Wiltshire, beautifully sited beside a lake, Old Wardour Castle was built in the late 14th century by John Lord Lovel as a lightly fortified but showy and luxurious residence. Part of the Kevin Costner film "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves", was filmed here. It is the perfect place for a picnic.
