The Historic and Botanic Garden Bursary Scheme
The Historic and Botanic Garden Bursary Scheme (HBGBS) enables enthusiastic and committed horticulturalists to increase their horticultural and other technical skills through garden placements, staff secondments and practical training events in a range of historic and botanic gardens throughout the UK.
Over a period of four years (2006 - 10), more than 1,000 learning opportunities, from a single day to a year, will be offered thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and a partnership of world-class organisations including: English Heritage, Lantra, GreenSpace, the Royal Horticultural Society, Sir Harold Hillier Gardens, the Royal Botanical Gardens of Edinburgh and the Professional Gardeners Guild.
The HBGBS is tailored to suit the individual training needs of each applicant by offering a variety placements, secondments and support for professional development. This range of training opportunities enables each trainee to develop a wide range of craft skills as well as targeting specific areas of expertise which could include:
- Conservation and management of historic gardens and landscapes (including research, analysis, assessment of significance, preparation of master plans and maintenance schedules).
- Interpretation of historic gardens or plant collections
- Practical heritage and plant conservation gardening skills
- Organic gardening and biodiversity management
- Strategic and policy development for gardens
- Project management for plant conservation
- Garden advisory expertise
- Plant collections management, including database management.
